Coral reefs lose recovery time as bleaching drives global decline

A global assessment released on 31 August finds hard coral cover 9.5% below its historical reference level, with increasingly frequent marine heatwaves interrupting recovery.

The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network compares average cover in 2020–2024 with 1980–2009. The decline is relative—not a 9.5 percentage-point fall: average cover changed from 30.2% to 27.3%.

Between 2023 and 2024, cover fell by a relative 8.9%, the largest single-year decline in the assessment. Its 21.1 million observations span 36,886 sites. Data end in 2024, so the fourth global bleaching event’s full ecological damage is not yet captured.

The report identifies climate-driven marine heatwaves as the dominant global pressure. Bleaching events now recur roughly every five to six years, leaving shorter recovery windows. Reuters’ 31 August reporting independently examines the findings and scientists’ warning of further losses.

Indonesia’s fires double in a month—and are driving orangutans from habitat

Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry says at least 202,010 hectares burned from January through July, while wildlife responders have now rescued seven orangutans because of the fires.

Update, 31 August, 11:17 UTC: the Environment Ministry identified 11,047 hectares of fires in concessions held by 19 companies across seven provinces, Reuters reports. The companies were not named. Investigators have not yet determined whether the fires were accidental or deliberately started; another 23 companies face fire-risk inquiries. The concession figure is distinct from the national January–July total and should not be added to it.

Reuters’ 31 August analysis of Copernicus Fire Emissions Watch reports 17.1 million tonnes of carbon emissions from Indonesian fires over the preceding seven days—429% above the seasonal mean. This is carbon, not a carbon-dioxide-equivalent estimate; the rolling weekly emissions measure is separate from the January–July burned-area total below.

The official burned-area total rose from 107,465 hectares for January through June to 202,010 hectares through July—an increase of 94,545 hectares in a single month. Fires across six provinces on Borneo and Sumatra have spread haze through Indonesia and into neighbouring Malaysia, triggering respiratory illness and moving thousands of school classes online.

In West Kalimantan, a farmer found a roughly 20-year-old orangutan collapsed near a palm-oil plantation beside the fire zone. Veterinarians said thick smoke had caused hypoxia and suspected an acute respiratory infection. The animal, named Sampurna, received oxygen and intravenous fluids before transfer to a rehabilitation centre.

The rescue foundation says Sampurna is the seventh orangutan it has recovered because of the fires. The animal had no severe burns and is intended for release after recovery, but the incident shows how smoke, habitat disturbance and displacement extend the damage beyond the land visibly consumed by flames.

Why it matters

These fires are simultaneously a carbon event, a public-health emergency and a wildlife crisis. The near-doubling of burned area in July shows the incident accelerating, while seven orangutan rescues provide direct evidence that critically endangered wildlife is being displaced and harmed.

The wider context

Peatlands can smoulder below ground for long periods and are difficult to extinguish. Drainage and land clearance expose carbon-rich soil to fire, turning local burning into regional haze and long-lived greenhouse-gas emissions.

What happens next

Sampurna’s recovery and possible release will be monitored alongside the wider fire season. Rainfall, suppression work and enforcement will determine whether the burned-area curve continues rising as El Niño strengthens.

Nepal sought wider China hazard data months before catastrophic flood

Officials discussed closer cross-border monitoring in May, but Nepal says it still lacked the glacier, avalanche and water-level data it wanted when the 26 August disaster struck.

AP’s 31 August update reports 903 deaths and 4,247 missing in Nepal. Tibet’s figures, dated 30 August, are 16 deaths and 546 missing. Adding these jurisdictional counts gives 919 deaths and 4,793 missing; the missing are not presumed dead.

Update, 31 August: Reuters reports that Nepal’s disaster authority lists 933 people missing from hydropower projects. Teams are attempting to open debris-blocked tunnels. The missing-worker figure is not a confirmed count of people alive inside tunnels, and does not establish the cause of their loss.

At a 27 May meeting in Kathmandu, Nepali and Chinese officials discussed shared inventories of glacial lakes, hazard mapping and joint risk-reduction measures. Two Nepali officials told Reuters they did not receive as much access as requested to information on glacier movement and water levels. A Chinese delegation said it lacked authority to sign an agreement and sought further talks.

China says it has shared information in a timely manner and points to warnings about heavy rain and cascading hazards sent before the flood. Experts and officials quoted by Reuters stressed that limited bilateral cooperation has not been established as a significant cause of the catastrophe: the glacier failed in a remote, relatively unmonitored area where forecasting remains exceptionally difficult.

The disaster nevertheless exposed the fragility of the warning chain. Surveillance footage placed the torrent at the Tibetan border crossing at 8:32 a.m. Nepal time. Nepal’s hydrology team received a call 26 minutes later and issued a public mobile alert at 9:13—41 minutes after the border impact—after monitoring stations stopped transmitting and local officials confirmed the flood.

At least four monitoring stations were destroyed as an estimated 57.4 million cubic metres of water, mud and debris travelled 168 kilometres downstream. The flood damaged 19 bridges, about 40 kilometres of highway and more than a tenth of Nepal’s power-generation capacity.

Nepal now plans to seek a formal agreement providing precipitation and river-level data every 10 minutes, modelled on its arrangement with India. Recovery, identification and renewed upstream-water monitoring continue alongside that policy effort.

Why it matters

The Himalayas’ rivers and hazards cross political borders, but the systems for observing them remain fragmented. The evidence does not show that better data would have prevented this disaster; it does show an unresolved accountability and preparedness gap before the next one.

The wider context

Accelerating glacier melt, declining snow cover and more erratic snowfall are increasing flood and landslide risks across the Hindu Kush Himalayas. Monitoring remains technically difficult, while China, India and downstream countries control different parts of the same high-altitude water systems.

What happens next

Watch for a formal Nepal–China data-sharing agreement, its update frequency and whether it covers glacier movement, avalanches and lake levels—not only rainfall forecasts. Independent reconstruction of the warning timeline will be essential to distinguish unavoidable limits from correctable failures.

Grand Canyon flood disables water pipeline; overnight lodging suspended

AP’s late-Sunday update reports the park’s sole water pipeline is disabled. Hotel and lodge stays stop on 31 August; residents are asked to conserve water.

The National Park Service’s 30 August appeal asks for information about hikers and backpackers in the Bright Angel Creek corridor, including the North Kaibab Trail, Bright Angel Campground and the Box north of Phantom Ranch. Park staff and Arizona’s Department of Public Safety are continuing the response.

AP reports that footbridges were destroyed and the creek bed widened. More than 60 people were evacuated from Phantom Ranch. People still unaccounted for must not be treated as confirmed casualties.

In its 30 August evening update, NPS reported recovering a 46-year-old man near Crystal Rapids. ABC News subsequently reported the death. The cause and its connection to the flash-flood missing-person search have not been established in the official update.

The flood’s impact now extends beyond damaged trails to an essential water service. Visitor accounting also remains unresolved.

The official appeal concerns people who may have been in the affected corridor; it is not a confirmed casualty list. This report makes no claim attributing the individual flood to climate change.

New bilateral programme · extraction target announced

A 25-year US–Venezuela deal opens 17 oilfields and eight new blocks

Venezuela says the bilateral programme will target more than 1.5 million barrels of crude a day—an initial goal within a wider expansion of the country’s oil industry.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced the programme in a late-night address carried by state broadcaster VTV. She said it would run for 25 years, develop 17 strategic oilfields and begin with a production target above 1.5 million barrels a day. Venezuela currently produces roughly 1.25 million barrels a day.

The announced target applies only to the bilateral arrangement with the United States. Rodríguez said the broader plan also includes eight greenfield oil blocks—areas opened for new development rather than extensions of existing production—and described 1.5 million barrels a day as an initial goal rather than a ceiling.

President Donald Trump had announced the framework a day earlier, saying the United States had secured majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven reserves through a partnership with private business. Venezuelan officials are preparing agreements granting exploration and production rights to several companies, including US firms.

Why it matters

The programme is designed to lock in and expand crude extraction over a quarter-century. Even before its full contractual and environmental terms are public, the announced scale points toward additional fossil-fuel infrastructure, production and associated emissions rather than a managed transition away from oil.

The wider context

Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, but years of underinvestment, sanctions and operational decline have kept output far below historic levels. Reviving that capacity could add a durable source of heavy crude to global supply while countries are meant to be cutting greenhouse-gas emissions.

What happens next

The next evidence will be the company agreements expected in early September, including the fields, investment schedules and environmental conditions attached to new exploration rights. The final contracts will show how quickly the announced production target can translate into drilling and output.
